Palm oil has been a hot topic recently. But exactly what is palm oil? Produced from the fruit of the oil palm tree, palm oil is used as a raw material in food and non-food industries. It’s even used in products such as oven chips, cosmetic products, margarine and biodiesel.
In some sense the production of palm oil, in areas such as south-east Asia, has aided economical development. However due to the vast range of products palm oil is used in, the demand in recent years has risen to gigantic levels. As a result of this, entire tropical rainforests are having to be destroyed simply to make room for the plantations needed to produce palm oil. It’s truly resulting in a terrible cost on the environment and even our global climate as a whole. With sustainable palm oil this is no longer an issue.
The Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) has created a globally agreed set of environmental standards. Sustainable palm oil is produced completely by palm oil plantations which abide by these standards.
